Oral Anticoagulation
Anticoagulants are a class of drugs used to prevent blood clotting. The two main anticoagulants are heparin and warfarin. Heparin is given only by injection; warfarin (one brand name is "Coumadin®") comes as a tablet to be taken once a day with or without food and thus is called an oral anticoagulant.
Warfarin is prescribed for people with certain types of irregular heartbeat, people with replacement or mechanical heart valves, and people who have suffered a heart attack. Warfarin is also used to treat or prevent swelling and blood clot in a vein and pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in the lung).
