Mononucleosis

Infectious mononucleosis is caused by Epstein-Barr virus and is common in adolescents and children.  Typical symptoms include fatigue, fever, and sore throat.  In some cases, a swollen spleen may develop or there can be liver involvement.  In rare cases, the heart or central nervous system can be involved.  Transmission usually occurs with contact with saliva.  Once infected, EBV will lie dormant in some cells of the person’s immune system.  Nearly all adults have been exposed to the virus.
