Varicella Zoster
Varicella zoster, or chickenpox, is the clinical manifestation of infection with the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). Chickenpox, the primary infection, is highly contagious characterized by scattered itchy sores and fever. Chickenpox most commonly affects children between 5 and 8, although adults and younger children may get it.
Once chickenpox runs its course, the virus becomes latent; shingles occurs when the virus reactivates. Anyone who has had chickenpox could develop shingles. The two major risk factors are increasing age and declining immunity.
