ALERE ACQUIRES GENECARE
Alere announced the acquisition of GeneCare, the most recognized and respected provider of prenatal risk assessment and diagnostic solutions to pregnant women nationally and internationally, in July, 2009.
Alere Women’s & Children’s Health offers a total spectrum of obstetrical care services ranging from risk assessment, to identifying women at risk for preterm birth, to a neonatal program for early infant care management. Adding GeneCare’s significant expertise in pre- and post-natal medical genetics within the areas of obstetrics and pediatrics, as well as its research and teaching capabilities, significantly empowers Alere to offer the most comprehensive portfolio of first trimester fetal screening tests in the industry.
It has been Alere’s objective to strengthen our early pregnancy risk identification capabilities, enabling us to expand our continuum of care and further build our partnerships with physicians and patients. The expanded services we can now offer through GeneCare will allow us to provide better risk identification and a single-point of service for a woman’s pre- and post-pregnancy needs. In addition, women and/or families requesting genetic counseling receive supportive, non-directive attention from caring professionals. GeneCare’s counseling staff includes genetic counselors and Board Certified Medical Geneticists with extensive training and experience.
Detecting fetal abnormalities earlier has been an increasing focus in obstetrics. Recent advancements in technology have given healthcare providers and expectant women the ability to have more accurate information about the health of their fetuses in a timely and cost-effective manner.
Alere’s commitment to offering the newest advancements in women’s and children’s health is epitomized by this new partnership with GeneCare
ABOUT GENECARE
GeneCare was founded by Philip Buchanan, Ph.D., FACMG in 1983 as a private, academic Medical Genetics Center, and was instrumental in bringing Nuchal Translucency (NT) training to the US and has conducted the majority of NT training since.
In 1998, Genecare introduced Early Screen®, the earliest, safest, and most accurate first trimester prenatal screening test at 11-13 weeks for Down syndrome, trisomy 18/13, and other chromosomal abnormalities, birth defects, and perinatal risk. GeneCare helped develop a standard screening protocol implemented in the United States and over 80 countries, which is the national and international Standard of Care for first trimester screening.
